     Introduction:

    SANBS is seeking a Relief Blood Bank Technologist to support routine and specialist testing in blood banks, including compatibility testing, postnatal screening, and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations. The role also involves supervising and verifying work done by less experienced or trainee staff.

     Key Responsibilities:

    Operational Duties:

    • Perform routine blood bank testing (e.g., compatibility tests, postnatal investigations)

    • Verify results by Technicians, Trainees, and Student Technologists

    Technical Functions:

    • Ensure high-quality testing and interpretation

    • Troubleshoot issues and escalate complex cases if necessary

    Quality & Risk:

    • Comply with laboratory quality standards and protocols

    • Participate in audits and continuous quality improvement

    Maintenance:

    • Maintain lab instruments and ensure functionality

    • Conduct routine equipment checks

    Customer Service:

    • Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals

    • Ensure professional and timely reporting of results

     Special Job Requirements:

    • Must be available for:

      • Overtime

      • Night shifts & weekends (as rostered)

      • Local & national travel (occasionally)
