    Job Overview

    The Clinical Nurse / Professional Nurse (Recovery) is responsible for providing safe, high-quality, patient-centred nursing care to patients in the post-anaesthetic recovery unit (PACU). The role focuses on the assessment, monitoring, and stabilisation of patients following surgical and anaesthetic procedures, ensuring optimal recovery outcomes.

    The incumbent coordinates care within a multidisciplinary healthcare team, applying scientifically based nursing principles, advanced clinical skills, and professional judgment. Care is delivered holistically, addressing the patient’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs, in line with Netcare’s values of Care, Truth, Participation, Compassion, and Dignity.

    Job Description

    1. Clinical Care and Patient Management (Recovery)

    • Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document individualized nursing care for post-operative patients.

    • Monitor patients’ airway, breathing, circulation, neurological status, pain levels, and vital signs in the recovery unit.

    • Identify and manage post-anaesthetic and post-operative complications promptly.

    • Initiate, direct, and maintain emergency and resuscitation procedures (within Scope of Practice).

    • Act as a patient advocate, ensuring comfort, safety, and dignity during recovery.

    • Communicate patient status effectively with anaesthetists, surgeons, nursing staff, and families.

    • Ensure accurate handover and shift documentation reflecting patient condition and acuity.

    2. Consistency and Coordination of Care

    • Serve as a clinical resource to assist staff in assessing, planning, and evaluating nursing care.

    • Ensure continuity of care through effective communication between recovery staff, wards, and nursing management.

    • Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and care planning.

    • Coordinate patient transfers from recovery to wards or critical care units when appropriate.

    3. Quality, Risk, and Safety Management

    • Maintain a safe, clean, and secure recovery environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

    • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and recovery unit SOPs.

    • Monitor and ensure safe utilisation of equipment, medications, and supplies.

    • Participate in quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

    • Deliver cost-effective care within the allocated budget.

    4. Teamwork and Collaboration

    • Work collaboratively with theatre staff, anaesthetists, surgeons, ward staff, and support departments.

    • Contribute positively to team goals and hospital objectives.

    • Promote effective communication and teamwork within the recovery unit.

    5. Education, Training, and Mentorship

    • Support the education and mentoring of nursing staff and students in the recovery unit.

    • Participate in in-service training, orientation of new staff, and emergency preparedness drills.

    • Collaborate with Clinical Facilitators to identify learning needs and improve clinical competence.

    • Keep staff informed of updated clinical practices, policies, and procedures.

    6. Resource and Staff Allocation

    • Allocate staff according to patient acuity and clinical needs in the recovery unit.

    • Adjust staffing levels to ensure safe and effective patient care using sound clinical judgment.

    7. Professional Development and Innovation

    • Maintain active registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

    • Engage in continuous professional development to maintain clinical competence.

    • Stay updated with Netcare policies, procedures, and digital healthcare systems.

    • Support the adoption of electronic patient records, e-scripts, and clinical order systems (CareOn).

    Inherent Requirements

    • Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)

    • Thorough knowledge of general and specialised nursing theory and practice

    • Extensive understanding of modern nursing care principles

    • Experience in a Recovery / PACU / post-anaesthetic care environment (preferred)
