Job Purpose
To manage the Fruit & Veg department by:
- Maximising sales (turnover)
- Minimising stock losses and waste
- Ensuring high standards in merchandising, hygiene, and customer service
- Leading and managing staff effectively
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- 2–4 years experience in a Fruit & Veg / Produce environment
- 1–2 years experience managing a team or department
- Proven leadership and staff management experience

Key Responsibilities
Merchandising & Stock Control
- Ensure shelves are stocked, fresh, and visually appealing
- Conduct regular quality checks on produce
- Follow stock rotation procedures (FIFO)
- Ensure correct pricing and product labelling (SEL)
- Monitor promotions and product availability
- Minimise waste and shrinkage
Food Safety & Hygiene
- Maintain hygiene and housekeeping standards
- Ensure compliance with food safety regulations
- Implement and monitor cleaning schedules
- Complete daily food safety checklists
Staff Management
- Supervise and support staff
- Set targets and delegate tasks
- Train and coach employees
- Handle performance issues and non-compliance
- Manage staff schedules (Kronos system)
Customer Service
- Assist customers with queries
- Handle out-of-stock situations professionally
- Ensure department is clean, organised, and customer-ready
Administration & Systems
- Monitor sales, waste, and department performance
- Use systems like SAP for:
- Stock control
- Waste processing
- Transfers
- Generate and analyse reports
- Ensure equipment is maintained and functional
Working Environment
- Fast-paced retail setting
- Requires standing for long hours
- Involves working with fresh food products
- May include weekend and shift work
