Job Overview
The Enrolled Nurse (Medical Ward) provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients in a medical ward under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role focuses on delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred care while maintaining professional standards, accurate documentation, and compliance with hospital policies.
The Enrolled Nurse is accountable for their own nursing actions and supports the implementation of nursing care plans developed by the Registered Nurse. Care is delivered holistically, promoting patients’ physical, emotional, and overall wellbeing in line with Netcare’s values of Care, Truth, Participation, Compassion, and Dignity.
Job Description
1. Patient Care and Clinical Duties

Provide direct nursing care within Scope of Practice.

Contribute to the holistic care of patients in the medical ward.

Implement nursing care plans initiated by the Registered Nurse.

Monitor and report changes in patient condition to the RN or sister-in-charge.
-
Communicate effectively with patients regarding their care and treatment.
-
Promote patient health, comfort, and overall wellbeing.
-
Practice infection prevention and standard precautions at all times.
-
Carry out clinical procedures according to hospital standards.
-
Attend handover reports at the start of each shift.
-
Refer patient and doctor complaints to the sister-in-charge.
2. Administration and Documentation
-
Maintain accurate, complete, and timeous patient documentation.
-
Assist with patient file compilation and record keeping.
-
Ensure correct charging and control of ward stock.
3. Governance, Quality, and Risk Management
-
Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment free from medico-legal risks.
-
Adhere to Netcare policies, procedures, and medical waste management principles.
-
Ensure correct use, cleaning, and storage of equipment.
-
Report equipment needing repair or replacement to the sister-in-charge.
-
Identify and report potential or actual risks.
-
Maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct at all times.
-
Participate in ward quality improvement programmes.
-
Act in a supervisory role over Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries (ENAs).
4. Teamwork and Collaboration

Work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Support the education and training of ENAs.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
5. Professional Development

Participate actively in own professional development.

Maintain competence in CPR.

Keep up to date with Netcare’s evolving policies and procedures.

Practice in accordance with SANC regulations and healthcare legislation.
Skills and Requirements
-
Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Enrolled Nurse
(or equivalent NQF Level 3 qualification) -
Compliance with the SANC Code of Conduct and applicable healthcare legislation

Relevant experience in a medical ward or nursing discipline (advantageous)

Good communication, teamwork, and organisational skills
